Quilts for Michael Cuddyer & Family - Minnesota Twins

Here are two quilts that I made for Mike Cuddyer, of the Minnesota Twins. The small one was for his newborn son...like the "TBD" in place of the number???

The other quilt is a lap that was made for his father, Henry.

Upton Quilt Featured in USA Today - reposted

Here is the article written by Seth Livingstone, a reporter for USA Today Sports. You can find the actual article and picture of the quilt on his blog at USA Today. But I'm posting the article and I'll upload the picture.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Pick up Tuesday's USA Today to read all about two of baseball's budding stars, brothers B.J. and Justin Upton. I recently had the chance to speak to the Uptons and their parents -- Yvonne and Manny. The parents go out of their way to divide their time equally when it comes to spending time with their sons and watching games on TV (an all-night prime-time undertaking when Tampa Bay and Arizona both play at home) and in person. That's one reason Yvonne Upton was so excited about her new quilt (the family has several specially-made baseball-themed quilts) that she received prior to her trip to Arizona last week. Her new quilt gives B.J., a center fielder for the Rays, and Justin, a right fielder for the Diamondbacks, equal billing. Designed by her friend, Kim Brinsfield of Virginia Beach, Va., Yvonne's salute to her sons' major league status is 56 1/2 x 72 inches and took more than two months to produce. With Yvonne’s name across the center, it features the names of both players, the blue and white Tampa Bay team colors and logo on the top half, and red, tan and black Arizona scheme on the bottom. It’s cotton on the front side, a fluffy polyester blend on the back. “I had it made special,” says Yvonne Upton, “and it is really nice.” Hey, until the MVP trophies come along, quilts will have to do.

Anbo on Etsy - Featured Artisan

OMG!

When I first visited Anbo's shop, I LOVED what I saw! I have to tell you that my eye was immediately drawn to the pictures that I NEVER read the shop's banner.

I THOUGHT that everything was made with polymer clay or something...it's NOT!!!

Her shop features Kanzashi items. "Kanzashi" is an old Japanese art of making silk flowers for hair decoration. WHAT???? These items are made from SILK!!!

I couldn't limit myself to 2 pics this time...but did somehow manage to stop at 3.

You MUST go by her shop and see for yourself and see more of the craftsmanship!

Tell Us About A Vet That You Would Like To Honor

This is such a special day. We all enjoy the day off from work and bbq'ing with our family and friends.

Let us take a moment to share stories and pictures to remember and honor the veterans in our lives.

Please feel free to share with us.

This is a day of honoring...I will not be doing my usual "networking" and "promoting" today.

Let's Honor The Day

While we're all busy today: hosting/attending bbq's, enjoying the day spent with family and friends relaxing, please remember to HONOR the day.

Take a brief moment to reflect on the gravity of the day. So, many men and women in the armed forces have given their lives; are fighting for their lives; are fighting/fought for our freedom for over 200 years.

I live in an area of the country that has (an easy) half dozen military bases (the nearest 15 min. and the furthest 45 min.) close to my home. We respect, honor, and are proud of our military EVERY day.

But even we (if you're not military) sometimes need to reflect on the sacrifices our men and women have made. Their families have sacrificed. Wives/husbands who have lost their spouses or have spouses currently deployed. Children who lost a parent or live with the worry DAILY of a parent deployed.

So, please take just a brief moment to reflect on the men and women of the past, and of the ones, currently fighting for our country. No matter what your views are on the wars, they are still fighting for OUR freedom!

Newest Additions to My Shop

I've been so busy promoting others (which is really a lot of fun to do) that I forgot to mention a couple of my newest items.

I've had backorders for the microwave potato bag made with potato fabric. The fabric is in and I've filled orders. They're ready to be shipped first thing Monday. Get your's while the fabric's still available. I work in a quilt shop and it's VERY difficult to get (some shops, on the web, still have it as backordered until the end of the month).

I also have 2 new Durable Market Bags: Watermelons and Mermaids. Cute and strong enough to carry groceries, books, craft projects, whatever your heart desires!

A NOTE: My Market Bags are available in 3 different styles:

1) Durable (which are lined and have a strong inner stabilizer - Decor Bond) $27.95
2) Lined (outer fabric and a lining; NO stabilizer) $21.95
3) Orginal (NO lining or stabilizer) $14.95

All bags are made with french seams, so you won't have any seams exposed to fraying. They're all outer/topped stitched to give the bags a "boxed" look and to maintain shape. They can all be machine washed, dried, and ironed. All fold flat to carry in your purse or for storage in your glove compartment.

If you see a bag made in one style but would like it made in another; just let me know!

Always free shipping with no minimum purchase on all of my sites, too.

More Recycling and Upcycling Tips

Excess Paper - Having 4 kids, I have found that elementary schools are the worst (by far) at wasting paper!

When my two youngest sons were in elementary school, at the same time, I was flabbergasted at the amount of waste paper that I received every week. EVERYTHING was double...memos from the PTA, general teacher memos, memos from the principal, etc., etc.

I felt guilty just throwing them into the recycle bin, so I figured out a way to use them. I keep anything that wasn't used, on the reverse side, on the pullout tray above my pc keyboard.

I'm always jotting things down while I'm at the pc, so why use "good" paper for that??? So, now I call it my "crap" paper. The kids and my husband know what I mean when I say "use the crap paper" when they need paper for something not "good" paper-worthy. :)

Now that I only have one son (and this is his last year) in elementary school, it's amazing the amount of "crap" paper that is no longer sent home.

What are other people's use? Again, I don't use this "paper" for my critters because I don't want them gnawing on the ink.

Empty Paper Towel Rolls - I have a couple of different uses for empty paper towel rolls.

1) I have a plastic box, roughly the length of the roll, and big enough to store 5-6 empty ones. When I make my bindings (for quilts, placemats, etc.) I wrap the finished binding around the roll, pinning it at various spots so that it doesn't slip.

2) Because inevitably end up with more than I need, I give them to my gerbil. He just has a field day gnawing away and finishes off a roll in minutes. All the other animals couldn't be bothered but at least it makes his day. lol

Toilet Paper Rolls - You could use them for small binding projects, I suppose, but I don't bother. I just give them to my little gerbi-nator and he ends up with a nice stash of bedding by the end of the week (mixed in with little bits of batting).

Cotton Batting Scraps - Now, I have to admit that I'm a pack rat and have a difficult time throwing things away. I use them for: 1) pincushion linings, 2) placemats, 3) table runners, 4) for the gerbils and hamsters.

Therma-Insulated Batting Scraps - I use these for: 1) to make insulated coasters, 2) trivets, 3) oven mitts

My Recycle & Upcycle Tips

Most of us have our "little" parts that we do to help the environment.

I thought I'd share a few of mine.  I'd love to hear your's, too.

Selvages:  1)  For a long time now, I've filled a small (recipe card-size) box with cut up bits of my selvages.  I then keep a small lid, of another box, filled with these bits.  I use the selvages as thread starters and enders.  For those of you that might not know what I mean...when I finish sewing a block, seam, etc. instead of just cutting my threads and leaving a long "tail", I sew a bit of selvage for a couple of stitches and then snip my block free.  This saves me a lot of wasted thread and, even more importantly, headaches that are caused when my threads get caught up under the plate of my machine or on the back of my next block.  2) There are a number of patterns, etc. that you can use just by sewing strips of selvages together.  Someone was asking for selvage donations, on twitter, one day.  She pointed me to a website that featured products made JUST from selvages.  I can't for the life of me remember the name of the site though.  But I now have 2 bags hanging on my work-wall...one for me and one for the woman requesting selvages.  I'll be mailling my first bag to her by the end of the week.

Rotary Blades:  Once my rotary blades get to dull for fabric, I don't throw them away.  I put them into the empty package (of the new blade) and mark them "paper".  I have a 2nd rotary cutter that is filled with these "dull" blades.  I cut paper or just about anything that isn't fabric with them.  They last for a very long time and get a 2nd "life".  NOTE:  When these blades are too old to use any longer, I have a small Glad container with the lid sealed by masking tape.  A small slit is cut in the lid and I store my old blades in it.  Once it's full, I cover the slit and dispose of the blades.  This keeps people, or animals, from getting cut by them.  Yes, they can still slice a finger like butter.

Jeans/Denim: I've been making baby and toddler sized "hide and seek" rag quilts lately.  I decided that a great way to give new life to old jeans and denim shirts was to cut them up and make them into these cute little quilts.  I "raid" a thrift store, that's just down the street from my house, for my projects.  Once the quilts have been pieced and ragged (all exposed seams cut) I then wash them in hot water and dry them on high.  This steralizes them and gives them the "ragged" looked.  It also helps me to keep the costs of these quilts down.  It is VERY expensive to make reversible applique rag quilts any other way.  I have a traditional one for sale, in my shops, that can attest to the expense.  Ragging all the seams is very stressful on your hands, even when you use scissors specifically made for that purpose.

Old Spools:  Now here I am completely clueless.  I don't have any idea what to do with all my used spools of thread.  If anyone out there has suggestions, or would like to have them, let me know and I'll start a "bag" for you.  I always feel a little guilty everytime I throw one away but I'm enough of a pack rat as it is without keeping completely USELESS items (to me).

Okay, so there are my little tips that I use.  Let me know how you recycle and upcycle items.  I love to hear the creative ways things can be used/become.
